TikTok has recently come under fire for reportedly suggesting eating disorder and self-harm content to new teen accounts within minutes of signing up. This is a disturbing and concerning trend that needs to be addressed.

It is well-known that social media can have a negative impact on the mental health of teenagers. The constant comparison to others, the pressure to present a perfect image, and the continual stream of information can all contribute to feelings of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem.

But for TikTok to actively suggest content that promotes eating disorders and self-harm is truly concerning. Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses that can have devastating consequences, including death. And self-harm is often a sign of more profound emotional distress and can be a precursor to more serious mental health issues.

As parents, it is important to monitor your children’s social media use and to educate them about the potential dangers of these platforms. We need to have open and honest conversations with them about the importance of mental health and self-care. As I have said on many occasions before the communication piece is key and building trust with your child will allow these conversations to be much easier for you and your child.

TikTok also needs to take responsibility for the content that is being suggested to its users. The company must do more to prevent the spread of harmful content, and to ensure that its platform is not contributing to the mental health struggles of its users.

In conclusion, the suggestion of eating disorders and self-harm content to new teen accounts on TikTok is very worrying and something that needs to be addressed ASAP. Both parents and the platform are responsible for protecting teenagers' mental health and preventing the spread of harmful content.

As always please feel free to comment or reach out to me to discuss this further. I do encourage you to subscribe and also share this blog with friends and family.
